Effective AI governance does not happen through good intentions alone. It requires practical instruments — frameworks, templates, and structured processes — that translate principles into repeatable organisational behaviour.

Among the most widely adopted tools is the model card: a short document that accompanies a machine learning model and records its intended use, performance characteristics, known limitations, and evaluation methodology. Originally proposed by researchers at Google, model cards have since been adapted by organisations across sectors as a minimum baseline for model transparency. When used consistently, they create an audit trail that supports accountability at the point of deployment and beyond.

Risk assessment frameworks offer another layer of structure. Rather than treating all AI systems identically, these tools help organisations calibrate oversight to the level of risk a system presents. High-stakes applications — such as those that affect access to credit, employment decisions, or clinical care — warrant more intensive review than internal productivity tools. Tiered risk taxonomies, such as those embedded in the EU AI Act, provide a starting point, but organisations typically need to adapt them to their specific sector context and risk appetite.

Procurement checklists are increasingly important as organisations acquire AI capabilities from third-party vendors rather than building them in-house. A well-designed procurement checklist prompts buyers to ask vendors about training data provenance, bias testing, incident response processes, and contractual accountability. Without such tools, governance gaps often appear precisely at the boundary between an organisation and its suppliers — a blind spot that regulators are beginning to scrutinise closely.
